Koro is a warm and universal board book in te reo Maori about a day with grandad. The bond between grandfather and child is shown through big, beautiful images and simple Maori text. The child and their koro explore the day – they go for a walk, collect food from the garden, eat, tell stories, and snuggle up for a rest to finish.
Creators
Gavin Bishop ONZM, Tainui, Ngati Awa, is a leading New Zealand illustrator. He has published over 70 books internationally and been translated into 12 languages. He has written for television and theatre, as well as a libretti for the Royal New Zealand Ballet. His awards include the New Zealand Children’s Picture Book of the Year multiple times, the Sir Kingi Ihaka award for lifetime contribution to Maori art and culture, and the Prime Minister's Award for Literary Achievement – Non Fiction.
Reviews
Although these books are designed to stand alone, having the companion set in te reo Maori and English speaks to our bicultural foundations and they work well together. The books are filled with typically beautiful illustrations by Bishop, and it reminded me of my relationship with my koro; there were few words between us but plenty of unspoken love and tenderness.
