In 1965 SAID came to Munich as a student at the age of seventeen. Here he studied political science. After the Shah was overthrown in 1979, he briefly went to Iran. The theocracy newly established there by the mullahs prompted him to return to exile in Germany. He writes poetry and prose in German, which he masters in all its nuances and sees as his “home”. From 1995 to 1996 he was Vice President and from 2000 to 2002 President of the German P.E.N.
